House Whisperer

I know some of you were surprised when I said we sold our home.  A lot of you have only known me since we were in that house.   Some of you know me from the beginning of my blog when I lived in a home previous to the one I just sold.

None (except for my family) have known me before that.

If you did, you would know that Mr. Comforts and I are House Whisperers.

House Whisperers or House Savers....we find houses that are sad, neglected or forlorn and purchase them.  House Whisperers are very different from house flippers.  House Whisperers don't just slap on a new coat of paint and throw in some new light fixtures.

(before picture of the house we had prior to the one we just sold)

(after picture)

House Whisperers listen to the house....decide what the house needs and fix it up.  I can truly hear the house's contented sigh when we are finished.  We live in the house while we are remodeling.  Then we live in it a few more years, tweaking it to make sure it is just right.

It is fun fixing up a house.  Every house is different.  Some are fancy, some are cozy and some are very simple.  We have remodeled a Victorian home in upstate NY,  a brand new builders grade home in Florida. A 1940's farmhouse in Tennessee, a condo in Florida, a ranch home in NC and the farmhouse style home here in NC that we just sold.

It is very hard, not to get attached to a home we remodel.  We put our hearts and souls into the homes.  I think that is why they sell so quickly.  This last home was only on the market 4 weeks before we got the offer.  The buyer's asked that we leave the lions head fountain in the back yard.  The wife had been looking for a studio and love the black and white harlequin floor.  Two of the things we just knew we needed to add to this home.

In my next post, I will tell you more about choices we make as House Whisperers and what our plans are next.
Welcome Home,
Penny

Penny, that was a very quick sell especially this day and time. Can't wait to see the transformations on your new home as you do them.

Oh my goodness, Penny! I can't believe you sold your home, but I can understand the love of buying and fixing up. We've done it many years. I'm excited to see your new home and hear all about it. Congratulations!

Penny, I've only seen pictures of the 1st house you were in as a blogger but it was gorgeous. This last one was beyond gorgeous. I couldn't have sold it easily.

As soon as possible, I need to get you to my house and have you whisper to it. I already know it needs a new kitchen, but you can tell me the rest. Let's plan a date.

Penny, What a great patio and you transformed it from what looks like a "don't go near the edge" path to a wonderful and welcoming patio, with a fireplace, no less. Well done! Looking forward to your new projects.

Hi Penny,

No wonder your home sold so quickly - it was gorgeous!! I've been a visitor of your blog since December of 2008! You were one of the first people I started "following". I was Jan & Tom's Place then - that blog's gone and now I'm here...and still following!

I remember the house tour you gave earlier this year, from room to room. You certainly did put your heart and soul into the house and of course that's why it sold - and your skill in knowing what would work and what wouldn't makes all the difference.

You truly are a house whisperer. I think that's a mark of a good restoration...listening to the house. They do tell you what they need. You are smart to be able to listen. Your last home was so beautiful. Can't wait to see the new project.

What an incredible surprise! I never saw this one coming but I'm thrilled that you love what you do. My sweetheart's parents did much the same. The last home they bought and redid was beyond belief when they saw it with their hearts. I thought they were a bit 'nuts' with that one but when the time came to see it, they have made a beautiful home that sold quickly. Can't wait to hear more - and see your 'new' home.

I understand the House Whisperer concept. We have a dear friend who is an architect mostly doing remodels/add ons. I've had the pleasure of going with him a few times to see the "before" and hear the ideas he has for the "after".

From what you've shown I'd say you and your DH excell at what you do.

Wow! You really are a house whipsperer! I love that outdoor transformation on your previous house. I hope you will be in the same general area. I'm headed up to Lake Lure in a couple of weeks and really wanted to meet you. We also usually travel to Hendersonville on one of the days we are there. I hope you find another great house to whisper too. :)

Your home selling so quickly gives us hope.
The landscapers are here today. We are sprucing up the yard and gardens. We've worked on the indoors for a year, when health allowed. Hoping to sell this year.

I can't wait to see your next home.

Hi Penny,
I didn't know you were a "House Whisperer" Gary and I have been "House Whisperered" to 12 homes. We have been buying, fixing up and selling them for the last 36 years. In between finding the right home to transform we rented 7 times, so that makes 19 moves under our belts...Gary and I have always said the house will tell us what it wants. I often find myself drifting off and studying a room of our home, listening to what it wants. Right now our home is have crown molding installed throughout and new molding around all the doors inside and out.
Gary just turned 64, I am younger LOL. We think this will be our last hurah, and make this house our
retirement home.
I look forward to seeing all the beautiful transformations. Enjoy your new adventure.
Big hugs, Elizabeth

You really can see just what a home needs Penny! I've seen the magic you performed on the last two homes, I don't see how you can give them up. But it does give us the chance to see what you'll do next. Lucky us:>)

That was a super quick sale! I'm sure it's hard not to get attached to a house and you put so much work into that one!

So did you buy another house to fix up already?

Kathie Truitt said...

I would love to do that. As a matter of fact I've ALWAYS wanted to do that - what a wonderful way to display your creativity. Jealous.

I'm in shock! I've been away for a while and busy with a move too.
I love that you call yourselves,
'House Whispers" It is the perfect term for what you do. I can tell that you enjoy the whole process-it is always so lovely!
I do remember your last house too.
But I never knew you'd live so many other places.
Well, best of luck in whatever future plans you have. I can't wait to hear where life is leading you next!

We've moved five times since 1999 so I know how much work it is! But we stayed in one place (for 20 years) while we raised our kids. We like to house whisper too. Can't wait to see your new project. Mimi
